Ballantine DL, Aponte NE

Abstract

Specimens representing a new species of the green algal genus Verdigellas, are described from deep-water collections made using the submersible DSV NEKTON GAMMA in the Bahamas. Verdigellas nektongammea forms erect and spreading irregular palmate lobes, up to 2.0 cm in height and 4.0 cm across. The new species is unique among benthic marine Tetrasporales in posessing vegetative cells arrange in reticulate mucilaginous strands internally, resulting in numerous hollow cavities.
